The Walheim The School The school in Walheim consists of two buildings, a spacious schoolyard with green areas and a school garden. The old building was erected in 1951/52. The municipal library is also housed there. The extension of the school by the "new building" dates to 1964. Since 1971 the school is purely a primary school. After having finished 4 classes in Walheim all pupils continue their education in different secondary schools in Besigheim. About 160 children attend the classes of the primary school in Walheim to which has been affiliated a special instruction class in 1989/90. In March 2003 our arboretum was landscaped at the edge of the local forest.
The Special Instruction Class at the Primary School Since the school year 1989/90 the primary school in Walheim has had a special instruction class. Children who have been kept down have the chance to enter the primary school after having been teached well-directed in this class during one year. Children who are living in Walheim and neighboured communities attend this institution. The School Garden Our school has a school garden with a "wineyard". The conception of the garden comes close to real nature so that a great number of small wild animals can find hide and shelter. Lizards, for example, feel good in the niches of the wineyard wall and in stone piles. Wild bees find pieces of wood with drilled holes for brooding and specific troughs for drinking. Hedgehogs and various kinds of small animals can live without danger in a garden ark. Due to its exemplary landscaping the garden has been awarded repeatedly.
The Arboretum At the edge oft he municipal forest of Walheim and in the neighbourhood of the reafforestation area "Reuth" the first planting of trees of our aboretum started in March 2003. Each of the trees has a plaque showing its name and the class that has planted it. The idea is to create a tradition: in the future the pupils of each first class shall plant their special tree shortly after school starting. Observing the growth of their own tree as well as of other ones can be done naturally for a long time by the pupils. So an intense relationship with the tree itself, the forest and nature can be initiated. Mr Renner, forester at the forestry office in Vaihingen/Enz, has kindly given the small deciduous trees and conifers to the school for nothing. Due to his landscape conception it will be possible to plant further trees also in future. The distances between the trees are spacious enough to develop healthy tops each. To realize the idea of making an arboretum was only possible by the costfree disposal of ground on behalf of the communitiy of Walheim and the active assistance of its staff of workers during the preparatory period. The intense support of the hobby gardeners society and, first of all, the efficient engagement of Mr. Renner were also most helpful to organize the project.
